Known as Hirsty to friends and listeners, one of the UK’s radio greats
A skilled radio craftsman, who pretty much from the age of 8 years old knew that he wanted to be on the radio when he grew up.
After many phone calls for dedications to his local radio stations, Simon blagged his way into Radio Aire at aged just 12 years old. For the first few years he made tea for mullet haired DJ’s of the time, and he soon moved up the ranks though with a passion to succeed and was awarded a place on the overnight show at 16. He soon moved on to Minister FM in York and then The Pulse of West Yorkshire in Bradford in 95, this time to present his beloved evening show ‘The Evening Bit’
1997 saw the move to Hallam FM in Sheffield, his home town station where he hosted ‘Hirsty’s Big Drive Home’ for 3 years, proving to all in his own area that he would make it on the radio when he grew up, after being told numerous times that he wouldn’t by Teachers and friends. After a brief return to The Pulse to host his first breakfast show with Elisa Hilton, Simon went on to take over the breakfast show at Viking FM based in Hull gaining a bronze Sony award for the show in 2002.
